A.L.I.C.E. security bars installed to help protect our children in the event of a threatening intruder

security bar

Continuing our motto and mission Keeping our children safe one project at a time, The Smile BIG Foundation has purchased security bars that are currently being installed on every door inside the Janesville School.  These security bars are used in coordination with the A.L.I.C.E (Alert Lockdown Inform Counter Evacuate) program that the school has been training for in the event of a threatening intruder to help keep our children safe.  From inside the class room this bar can be inserted in a bracket attached to the door which physically locks the door to the frame from inside the room.  This way from outside the room the door cannot be breached.  We ask parents, PLEASE, sit down with your children and ask them about these bars and help them understand what they are for and why they are needed.  Please explain to them, that these bars are NOT toys and they are NOT to be played with. We hope and pray these bars are never needed, but in an event they may need to be used, they need to remain in tact and in good working order.

Sensors Approved!!!!!!

Posted on: January 23rd, 2014 by ryanb

GREAT NEWS to warm your heart on a horribly cold winter day!!

We received a call from the State of Iowa Department of Transportation Director, Max Christensen.  The Smile BIG Pilot Program was a success!  We were told the sensors have been approved and we can install sensors on all of our buses in Janesville.  More details will follow when we receive the “official” letter from Max; however, we wanted to share this great news with everyone.

Our next step will be to set up a meeting with Bob Hanson, Janesville CSD Transportation director, Mr. Meaney and the school board to ask for approval to have the Safe Zone sensors installed on all of our buses.

Smile BIG for Justin today!

Thank you to everyone who helped make this project a success!

The Smile BIG Foundation, as we all know, headed up a state-wide pilot program that will hopefully allowIowaschool districts to utilize child detection systems on their busses.  These sensors would be an aid to the school bus operator, to make sure their blind spots are clear of danger and to help prevent another tragedy.  Four school districts; Waverly-Shell Rock, Spencer, Union, and Janesville, each equipped two school busses, one with the Rostra child detection system and one with the Safe Zone system. Through your generous donations and support, the Smile BIG Foundation was able to fund all expenses incurred during this pilot program.

At the end of September, the pilot program officially ended.  We are now eagerly awaiting the verdict from Max Christenson of the Iowa Department of Education.  We hope to hear from him on or before October 31st!

October 31st will mark two years since Justin Bradfield was killed in a school bus tragedy. Because Justin touched so many of us in the Janesvillecommunity, The Smile BIG Foundation will be hanging up blue ribbons on Main StreetSunday the 27th – November 3rd, in celebration of his life.

We want to thank everyone for their support and patience while we await the decision from the Department of Education.  Once this project is concluded, we will begin pursing several other projects and will continue to work on Keeping our children safe, one project at a time.

The pilot program has officially ended.  The decision that would allow Iowa schools to use child detection systems on their busses is now in the hands of the Iowa Department of Education.  Soon we should know the answer if we can or cannot continue using these systems on our busses.  A special thanks to the schools that participated in the pilot program; Waverly/Shell Rock, Spencer, Union, and of course Janesville schools.  Thank you for all your input and participation with this project.
